Nazare Silver Coast Portugal
Nazare has become a popular seaside town located on Portugal's Atlantic coastal region the Costa Prata or perhaps more commonly known as the Silver Coast famous for its spectacular sunsets and miles of unspoilt sandy beaches. Nazare grew as a traditional fishing village and fresh fish are still landed daily and sold in the local market, many of the locals still carry on their lives in the old ways and still wear the costumes worn by the areas fishermen for centuries. Their wife%u2019s wearing traditional head scarf and hand embroidered aprons over a seven layer skirt one for each day of the week.
The town of Nazare consists of three areas The O Sitio or old town set high on the cliff, Pederneira an old part of town set on a hill top over looking, A Praia the newer area built along the towns famous beach. The original areas of the town built on high elevations to protect the inhabitants from attacks which lasted till the 19th century.
According to legend, the town was named from a statue of the Virgin Mary brought back from Nazareth in the 4th Century by a monk via Spain to Nazare in 711ad and placed on the cliff top at O Sitio looking out to sea. This is were the first church was built, later in 1377 The Church of Nossa Senhora da Nazare (Our Lady of Nazare) a splendid baroque building was built in the square.
Today Nazare is a thriving town rich in a mix of modern and old design, its beaches attract many visitors in the summer months but with so many to choice within a short distance you can always find a spot of your own. The area is renowned for its good food and entertainment and has many a fine restaurant and bars catering for all tastes.
The Silver Coast offers something for everyone from sporting fanatics who can choice from Golf, Fishing, Horse Riding, Biking, Walking, Sailing and Surfing to named but a few. For those looking for culture there are numerous interesting places to visit.
The area is also under going a period of considerable investment plans are well in hand for a new marina development in the town. Along with major road improvements to local towns are plans to extend the A8 motorway to join with the main A1 reducing journey times to the north and adding porto Airport to Lisbon's as gateways to the Costa de Prata. the nearby town of Leiria is also shortly to benifit from a major new shopping and entertainment complex with cinemas to be known as LeiriaShopping.
